Fred- you should adjust the clutch to engage later not earlier - if it is adjusted to engage earlier it is increasing the drag on the motor and this may be what is the problem. There should be no more than 1/8th inch of free play in the clutch cable and the engagement should take place as the clutch lever passes the mid point in its disengagement/engagement swing.
